What exactly are Kang Bi-o and Choi Jeong-yo to each other in Four Hands, Two Sonatas?

Rivals?

Best friends?

Or two musicians who understand each other better than anyone else?

Episode 7 makes that question even more interesting.

They started as rivals

Bi-o and Jeong-yo are both gifted musicians, so competition has always been part of their relationship.

But Four Hands doesn’t portray them as simple rivals trying to defeat each other.

Their competition pushes them forward.

Each becomes part of the other’s musical identity.

That is why Jeong-yo’s disappearance nine years ago affected Bi-o so deeply—and why his return changes everything.

Bi-o never really forgot Jeong-yo

When Jeong-yo finally returns after nine years, Bi-o doesn’t treat him like a rival who has suddenly reappeared.

He tells Jeong-yo that he had believed he was dead and that he is genuinely grateful to see him alive.

When Jeong-yo asks why that matters, Bi-o’s answer is simple:

Jeong-yo was his friend, and Bi-o desperately wanted him to be alive.

That moment says more about their relationship than any competition between them.

But Jeong-yo remembers Bi-o too

Episode 7 adds another layer.

Bi-o believes Jeong-yo has lost his memories, so he carefully introduces himself again.

Jeong-yo lets him believe it.

But later, we discover that Jeong-yo remembers at least part of their shared past.

Suddenly, his cold behavior means something very different.

He isn’t keeping his distance from someone he doesn’t remember.

He is keeping his distance from someone he does.

Why does their relationship feel different from a normal rivalry?

Because music connects them.

They don’t simply want to beat each other.

They affect how the other person plays, thinks, struggles and grows.

That is what makes their relationship one of the most compelling parts of Four Hands, Two Sonatas.

“Musical soulmates” may be an informal way to describe it, but it captures something important about the story:

Bi-o and Jeong-yo seem unable to separate their music completely from each other.

Even nine years apart couldn’t erase that connection.

Episode 7 makes the relationship more complicated

Now Bi-o wants to reconnect with someone he thought he had lost.

Jeong-yo, meanwhile, appears to remember far more than he admits.

That creates an unusual imbalance.

Bi-o is trying to recover their past.

Jeong-yo may be trying to escape it.

And that may be the real conflict between them.

The biggest question isn’t simply whether Bi-o and Jeong-yo are friends or rivals.

It’s this:

If their music keeps pulling them back together, why is Jeong-yo trying so hard to keep Bi-o away?
