BTS Just Made VMAs History—And It Wasn’t the 3 Awards

BTS won three awards at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

But the number three is not actually the most important part of the story.

The real headline is much bigger:

BTS just won Song of the Year at the VMAs for the first time.

With “SWIM,” the lead single from their fifth studio album ARIRANG, BTS became the first K-pop group to win one of the VMAs’ most prominent general music categories.

And there is an interesting detail hiding behind that achievement.

BTS Had Already Been Winning at the VMAs

BTS is hardly a newcomer to the MTV Video Music Awards.

The group has been collecting VMAs for years, particularly in categories connected to K-pop and groups.

In 2026, BTS won Best K-pop for “SWIM” and Best Group, extending its own record in both categories. It was the group’s fourth Best K-pop trophy and fifth Best Group win.

So another K-pop award would not have been especially surprising.

Song of the Year was different.

It placed BTS directly in competition with artists from across the broader music industry rather than limiting the field to a K-pop category.

That distinction makes the victory much more significant.

The Song That Changed the Record Book

“SWIM” is the lead single from ARIRANG, BTS’s fifth full-length album.

The album arrived in March 2026, following the group’s nearly four-year period away from full-group activities while the members completed their mandatory military service.

The 2026 VMAs therefore arrived during a major comeback period for BTS.

Winning Song of the Year added another milestone to that return.

BTS’s agency said the award felt especially meaningful because ARIRANG represented a new beginning for the group. The members also thanked ARMY and said they would continue making music and performing together as seven.

K-pop Had Already Opened the Door

There is another reason this win deserves attention.

BTS did not become the first K-pop artist to win Song of the Year.

That happened one year earlier.

In 2025, BLACKPINK’s Rosé and Bruno Mars won the award for “APT.” Yonhap described it as the first time a K-pop artist had been honored in the category.

Then BTS followed in 2026.

That creates an interesting two-year sequence.

2025: Rosé and Bruno Mars — “APT.”

2026: BTS — “SWIM.”

For years, K-pop artists were often discussed primarily through dedicated K-pop categories at Western award shows.

Now, two consecutive Song of the Year victories have come from artists connected directly to the K-pop world.

That is a notable shift.

Why “Song of the Year” Matters

Award categories can tell us a lot about how an industry organizes music.

A Best K-pop category recognizes achievement within K-pop.

Song of the Year operates differently.

It brings songs from different musical backgrounds into the same competition.

That means BTS’s victory was not simply another recognition of its position within K-pop.

It was recognition of “SWIM” in a much broader field.

And that is exactly why this particular trophy stands out from the other two BTS won that night.

Best K-pop confirmed BTS’s continuing influence within the genre.

Best Group recognized the group itself.

But Song of the Year recognized the song.

BTS Didn’t Even Need to Be There

There is an almost surreal element to the story.

BTS did not attend the 2026 VMAs ceremony.

The members were preparing for the next stage of their ARIRANG World Tour, which was scheduled to resume in Bogotá on October 2.

Even more unusually, the three BTS awards were among the categories that were not presented during the main CBS and MTV television broadcast.

So one of the biggest moments in BTS’s VMA history happened without the group standing on the main stage.

There was no live acceptance speech.

No red-carpet appearance.

No performance.

And yet BTS left the 2026 VMAs with three trophies.

A Different Kind of Comeback

The timing makes the Song of the Year victory even more interesting.

BTS returned as a full group after a long period of individual activities and military service.

They released ARIRANG, began a major world tour, and then returned to the VMAs.

The result was not merely a comeback nomination.

It was a clean sweep.

Three nominations.

Three wins.

And among them was the award BTS had never won before.

That makes the 2026 VMAs more than another chapter in the group’s long list of awards.

It is a marker of where BTS stands after returning as seven.

The Bigger K-pop Story

Perhaps the most interesting part is what happened around BTS.

Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song of the Year in 2025.

Lisa won Best Pop in 2026, becoming the first K-pop soloist to take that category.

And BTS won Song of the Year in 2026.

These are different achievements, but together they show K-pop artists appearing increasingly often in major categories that extend beyond the traditional K-pop label.

That does not mean the distinction between K-pop and other forms of pop music has disappeared.

But the award history is becoming harder to ignore.

BTS’s 2026 victory is therefore not just about adding another Moon Person to an already crowded trophy shelf.

It is about winning the award BTS had never won before—and doing it with a song that stood in the same category as artists from across global pop music.

Three trophies made the headline.

But Song of the Year is the one that changed the record book.
