BTS Had 3 VMA Nominations. They Won All 3. What Just Happened?

Three nominations.

Three wins.

That is the simplest way to describe BTS’s night at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

But when you look more closely, the result becomes much more interesting.

BTS did not simply collect three trophies from a long list of nominations. The group was nominated in exactly three categories—and won every single one of them.

So how did BTS go 3-for-3 at one of the biggest American music awards?

Three Nominations, Three Very Different Categories

BTS entered the 2026 VMAs with nominations in three categories.

The first was Song of the Year for “SWIM,” the lead single from the group’s fifth studio album, ARIRANG.

The second was Best K-pop, also for “SWIM.”

The third was Best Group, recognizing BTS as a group rather than a specific song.

Those three categories represent three different kinds of recognition.

Song of the Year placed BTS against artists from across the broader music industry. The nominees included Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson, RAYE, Ella Langley, and HUNTR/X’s “Golden.”

Best K-pop was a completely different field, with nominees including BLACKPINK, CORTIS, KATSEYE, LE SSERAFIM and Lisa.

And Best Group focused on the artists themselves.

BTS won all three.

The Most Important Win Wasn’t Necessarily the Most Obvious One

If someone simply looked at the final results, it would be easy to describe this as another impressive BTS awards sweep.

But Song of the Year changed the story.

This was BTS’s first win in the category.

The group had previously been nominated for Song of the Year with “Dynamite” in 2021, becoming the first Korean act nominated for the award, but it did not win at the time.

Five years later, BTS returned to the category with “SWIM.”

This time, the result was different.

BTS won.

That made the 2026 victory a milestone rather than simply another addition to the group’s trophy collection. It also followed BLACKPINK’s Rosé winning the same category with Bruno Mars for “APT.” in 2025, meaning a K-pop-connected artist has now won Song of the Year at the VMAs for two consecutive years.

Then There Was Best K-pop

Winning Best K-pop might sound less surprising for BTS.

The group has been one of the defining names in the category since the award was introduced.

But the 2026 victory still added another number to BTS’s record.

It was the group’s fourth Best K-pop win at the VMAs.

And “SWIM” defeated a particularly interesting group of competitors, including BLACKPINK’s “JUMP,” CORTIS’s “REDRED,” KATSEYE’s “PINKY UP,” LE SSERAFIM’s “SPAGHETTI” featuring j-hope, and Lisa’s “Dream.”

So BTS wasn’t simply competing against older K-pop names.

It was competing against several of the artists representing the current generation of global K-pop.

And “SWIM” came out on top.

The Fifth Best Group Trophy

Then came Best Group.

This was another category where BTS already had a long history.

The group had previously won Best Group four consecutive times from 2019 through 2022.

The 2026 victory became BTS’s fifth win in the category, extending its record for the most wins.

That makes the three wins particularly interesting when viewed together.

BTS won for:

The song.

The genre.

The group.

Three different ways of recognizing the same comeback.

And They Did It Without Attending

There is one more detail that makes the 3-for-3 result unusual.

BTS did not attend the ceremony in Los Angeles.

According to Yonhap, the group was absent because of scheduling conflicts while continuing its ARIRANG World Tour.

So the members were not sitting in the audience waiting to hear whether they would win.

There was no live reaction from all seven members.

There was no acceptance speech on the main stage.

Yet by the end of the night, BTS had won every category in which it had been nominated.

The group later thanked ARMY through a statement released by BigHit Music and described ARIRANG as a new beginning for BTS.

Why Does 3-for-3 Matter?

Awards statistics can sometimes be misleading.

A superstar can receive ten nominations and win three.

Another artist can receive two nominations and win two.

The numbers tell different stories.

BTS’s 2026 result is unusually clean:

3 nominations.
3 wins.
0 losses.

And those victories were not all concentrated in one narrow category.

One was a major song award.

One was a K-pop award.

One recognized the group itself.

That makes the sweep particularly easy to understand as a snapshot of BTS’s position at the 2026 VMAs.

A Comeback That Started With a Sweep

The timing matters too.

BTS returned as a full group in 2026 after a long period of individual activities and mandatory military service. The members released ARIRANG in March and began a major world tour.

The VMAs arrived during that comeback year.

And instead of receiving one symbolic nomination, BTS went into the ceremony with three opportunities and converted all three into wins.

The group wasn’t even physically in the building.

But its name appeared beside every category for which it had been nominated.

That is probably the simplest way to understand what happened at the 2026 VMAs.

BTS didn’t just win three awards.

It didn’t leave a single nomination on the table.

Three chances.

Three trophies.

3-for-3.
