Yoon Myung-joo

  • Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo were the stars. But for some viewers, the love story they could never forget belonged to Kim Ji-won and Jin Goo.

Part 2 — Did Kim Ji-won and Jin Goo Steal Descendants of the Sun? (You are here)

When Descendants of the Sun premiered in 2016, its leading couple attracted enormous attention.

Yoo Si-jin, played by Song Joong-ki, was a charming special forces officer with a talent for turning even dangerous situations into moments of romance.

Kang Mo-yeon, played by Song Hye-kyo, was an intelligent doctor who challenged him at every opportunity.

Their chemistry helped define the drama.

But there was another love story unfolding alongside theirs.

One filled with separation, frustration, stubbornness, and an almost unbearable longing.

It belonged to Yoon Myung-joo and Seo Dae-young, played by Kim Ji-won and Jin Goo.

Ten years later, their relationship still inspires viewers to revisit the drama.

    And I understand why.

The Second Couple Had a Problem the Main Couple Didn’t

The two romances in Descendants of the Sun begin from very different places.

Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon must discover whether their attraction can survive the conflict between their professions.

He is a soldier whose duty sometimes requires him to use force.

She is a doctor whose responsibility is to save lives.

Their differences create tension, but their romance also has plenty of humor, flirting, and playful exchanges.

Myung-joo and Dae-young face another kind of obstacle.

They already know they love each other.

Their problem isn’t falling in love. It’s being allowed to stay in love.

Myung-joo is an army doctor, a commissioned officer, and the daughter of a powerful military commander.

Dae-young is a noncommissioned officer whose relationship with her threatens to place him in conflict with the military hierarchy.

Her father disapproves of their relationship.

And Dae-young, despite his feelings, repeatedly tries to walk away.

For Myung-joo, his withdrawal feels like rejection.

For Dae-young, staying with her risks creating a future in which his love and career are constantly judged through her father’s authority.

That makes their relationship more complicated than a conventional romantic misunderstanding.

Yoon Myung-joo Refused to Let Her Father Choose Her Future

One reason I became a Kim Ji-won fan was the way she portrayed Yoon Myung-joo.

Myung-joo is beautiful, but that isn’t what makes her unforgettable.

She is direct, confident, sometimes impatient, and completely unwilling to pretend she doesn’t know what she wants.

As a commander’s daughter, she could have followed a comfortable and predictable path.

Instead, she chooses a man her father doesn’t approve of.

And she refuses to hide her feelings simply to make other people comfortable.

Her stubbornness occasionally causes problems. She can push Dae-young when he is already struggling with a difficult decision.

But I admire the fact that she doesn’t quietly surrender her future.

She has rank, privilege, and family expectations. Yet she insists that her heart belongs to her.

That determination gives the relationship much of its emotional power.

Seo Dae-young Wasn’t Simply a Man Running Away From Love

At first, Dae-young can be frustrating.

He loves Myung-joo, yet he keeps his distance.

He often seems more willing to suffer silently than explain what he feels.

From Myung-joo’s perspective, that can look like cowardice.

But the drama gradually reveals a more complicated conflict.

Dae-young wants to remain a soldier.

He takes pride in his service, his responsibilities, and the identity he has built for himself.

He also wants to love Myung-joo without becoming someone who depends on her father’s approval for his future.

That is why his decisions are so painful.

If he walks away, he loses the woman he loves.

If he stays under conditions he cannot accept, he fears losing something essential about himself.

Myung-joo wants him to choose their love. Dae-young wants to make that choice without losing his dignity.

    Neither desire is unreasonable.

And that is what makes their relationship compelling.

The Moment Their Love Became More Than a Romance

One of the most revealing developments comes in the later episodes.

Dae-young considers leaving the military so he can build a future with Myung-joo.

But Myung-joo is not simply delighted by the sacrifice.

She knows how much his career means to him.

She understands that he has worked hard to become the soldier he is.

The possibility that he might abandon that identity because of her is not the romantic victory she wants.

This is where their relationship becomes especially interesting.

    Myung-joo doesn’t merely want Dae-young beside her.

She wants the man she fell in love with to remain himself.

And Dae-young doesn’t want to be accepted as an exception granted to the commander’s daughter.

He wants to earn respect on his own terms.

Their struggle is no longer just about whether two people can date.

It is about whether they can create a future in which both people are respected.

Why Their Separation Was So Painful

The final episodes push both couples into devastating uncertainty.

Yoo Si-jin and Seo Dae-young disappear duringhave died.

Kang Mo-yeon and Yoon Myung-joo must confront the possibility that the men they love will never return.

But Myung-joo’s grief carries an additional burden.

She and Dae-young have spent so much time arguing, separating, and struggling to find a way forward.

When she receives the news of his apparent death, she is devastated by the thought that they never had the chance to resolve everything between them.

The KBS Drama Classic finale recap captures this emotional conflict.

Myung-joo’s grief is not only about losing Dae-young.

It is also about all the things they still needed to say.

That is a particularly painful kind of romantic tragedy.

When someone disappears before a relationship has found peace, even an ordinary argument can become an unbearable memory.

For viewers who followed the couple from the beginning, those scenes make their eventual reunion especially moving.

Their Happy Ending Was About Respect, Not Just Romance

The finale gives Dae-young an important decision.

After surviving the operation and returning to Myung-joo, he decides not to abandon his military career.

He wants to continue serving and find another way to earn her father’s recognition.

That choice changes the meaning of their relationship.

He is no longer trying to escape the problem by leaving the army.

And Myung-joo is no longer being asked to accept a future in which the man she loves has sacrificed his professional identity.

When her father finally acknowledges Dae-young, the reconciliation feels significant.

It isn’t simply permission for two people to be together.

It is recognition of the person Dae-young has worked to become.

Myung-joo fought for the freedom to choose whom she loved. Dae-young fought for the right to remain himself while loving her.

Their ending allows both things to exist together.

That is why I find their story so satisfying.

What Viewers Are Still Saying About the Gu-Won Couple

The relationship between Myung-joo and Dae-young is often called the Gu-Won couple by Korean fans, a nickname formed from the actors’ names, Jin Goo and Kim Ji-won.

And the couple continues to attract attention long after the drama’s original broadcast.

In July 2025, a YouTube review revisited Descendants of the Sun specifically from the Gu-Won couple’s perspective.

The premise was simple but revealing: even people who had watched the drama many times might discover something new by following the second couple’s story.

Among the comments, one viewer expressed a preference for the Gu-Won couple over the main romance.

Others praised Kim Ji-won’s emotional performance and the painful intensity of the relationship.

In another KBS Drama Classic discussion, a viewer described Seo Dae-young and Yoon Myung-joo’s romance as a particularly heartbreaking love story.

These are individual viewer reactions, not evidence that the secondary couple was universally more popular.

But they demonstrate something worth noticing.

A decade later, people are still discussing the emotions, choices, and sacrifices that made this relationship memorable.

That kind of response says a great deal about the staying power of these characters.

Did They Really Steal the Show?

I don’t think Descendants of the Sun needs a winner between its two couples.

The main romance and the secondary romance work because they offer different emotional experiences.

Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon give the drama much of its humor and romantic excitement.

Their conversations are playful, their chemistry is engaging, and their love story is central to the series.

Myung-joo and Dae-young provide a different kind of intensity.

Their relationship is quieter in some moments, more painful in others, and deeply connected to questions of pride, duty, and personal choice.

    One couple makes you smile.

The other can leave you holding your breath.

Together, they make the drama richer than either romance would be alone.

Personally, I was drawn most strongly to Myung-joo.

Her confidence, honesty, and determination made me a Kim Ji-won fan.

And Dae-young’s struggle to protect both his love and his identity made their relationship more meaningful to me.

So did Kim Ji-won and Jin Goo steal Descendants of the Sun?

For some viewers, their romance may be the one that stays in the heart the longest.

For me, it certainly remains one of the drama’s most unforgettable stories.

Ten Years Later, Their Love Story Still Feels Personal

Many Korean dramas have memorable second couples.

But Myung-joo and Dae-young stand out because their biggest conflict cannot be solved by a single confession.

    They love each other.

    They know it.

And still, they must confront family expectations, military hierarchy, personal pride, and the fear of losing one another.

Their relationship reminds us that love is not always about choosing between two people.

Sometimes it is about choosing how to live without betraying yourself.

That is the question Descendants of the Sun asked through Yoon Myung-joo and Seo Dae-young.

And ten years later, it remains worth remembering.

  • Why I Became a Kim Ji-won Fan Instead of Song Hye-kyo After Watching Descendants of the Sun

Part 1 — Why I Became a Kim Ji-won Fan Instead of Song Hye-kyo (You are here)

Two beautiful actresses. Two unforgettable love stories. But one fearless character completely changed whom I admired most.

When Descendants of the Sun aired in 2016, Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki were at the center of one of the most talked-about Korean romances of the decade.

Their chemistry was undeniable. Their romantic scenes were memorable, and Gummy’s “You Are My Everything” made those moments even more emotional.

I loved the drama. I still do.

In fact, even ten years later, I sometimes return to Descendants of the Sun when I’m feeling down. There is something about its humor, romance, and lively characters that makes me feel better.

But something unexpected happened when I first watched it.

    I became a Kim Ji-won fan.

Not because Song Hye-kyo was disappointing. Far from it.

It was because Kim Ji-won’s character, Yoon Myung-joo, represented something I found deeply attractive: a beautiful woman who was honest, outspoken, fearless, and determined to choose her own life.

Yoon Myung-joo Wasn’t Just Another Beautiful Woman

At first glance, Yoon Myung-joo seems to have everything.

She is a military doctor, a commissioned officer, and the daughter of a powerful army commander.

She has a respected career and a family background that could open doors for her.

But what made her interesting to me wasn’t her privilege.

It was her willingness to challenge the expectations that came with it.

Myung-joo falls in love with Seo Dae-young, played by Jin Goo. He is a dedicated soldier, but his lower military rank and different background create obstacles to their relationship.

    Her father disapproves.

Dae-young repeatedly tries to distance himself from her.

And yet Myung-joo refuses to behave like a woman who should simply accept the future others have chosen.

    She knows what she wants.

She isn’t afraid to say it.

And she isn’t willing to abandon the man she loves just because their relationship is inconvenient.

That was the moment I began to see Kim Ji-won differently.

She Could Have Taken the Easy Road. She Chose Love Instead.

What impressed me most was the contrast between Myung-joo’s position and her decisions.

As a commander’s daughter and an accomplished officer, she could have followed a more predictable path.

She could have avoided conflict with her father.

She could have accepted that military hierarchy and family expectations made her relationship difficult.

Instead, she fought for the right to make her own choice.

That doesn’t mean every decision she makes is perfect. Myung-joo can be stubborn, impatient, and emotionally demanding.

But those imperfections make her feel alive.

She doesn’t wait quietly for someone to decide her future.

She speaks directly, challenges people she loves, and sometimes makes situations more complicated because she refuses to hide her feelings.

For me, that combination of beauty, honesty, and boldness was irresistible.

I didn’t become her fan simply because she looked beautiful on screen. I became her fan because I admired the woman she portrayed.

Why Seo Dae-young and Yoon Myung-joo’s Romance Felt Different

The central romance between Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon has an irresistible playful energy.

Song Joong-ki’s character is confident, witty, and constantly ready with a teasing remark.

Song Hye-kyo’s character is intelligent, independent, and more than capable of answering him.

Watching them together is genuinely entertaining.

But the relationship between Myung-joo and Dae-young carries a different emotional weight.

    They already love each other.

Their biggest problem isn’t discovering their feelings. It is finding a way to stay together without sacrificing everything that matters to them.

Myung-joo wants Dae-young to stop running away.

Dae-young wants to be accepted for who he is, not merely tolerated because the commander’s daughter loves him.

    That distinction matters.

Love is not the only thing at stake. So are dignity, professional identity, and personal pride.

Their relationship asks a difficult question:

Can two people protect their love without asking one of them to give up who they are?

The Ending Made Me Appreciate Their Love Even More

One of the most satisfying aspects of the final episodes is how the conflict between love and military identity develops.

Dae-young considers leaving the army, but eventually decides he wants to remain a soldier and earn the commander’s respect without abandoning his profession.

He wants to be recognized as Seo Dae-young.

Not simply as the man Yoon Myung-joo has chosen.

And Myung-joo remains the same determined woman who refuses to give up on their future.

Their story ultimately moves toward reconciliation and acceptance.

For me, that gives their romance more meaning than a simple happy ending.

Myung-joo fought for the freedom to love. Dae-young fought for the dignity to be loved as himself.

That is why their relationship stayed with me.

I Wasn’t the Only Viewer Who Remembered the Second Couple

Years after the original broadcast, viewers are still revisiting Myung-joo and Dae-young’s story.

In the comments beneath a 2025 YouTube review dedicated to the couple, one viewer said they found the secondary couple more appealing than the main couple.

Others praised Kim Ji-won’s acting and described the relationship as one of their favorite parts of the drama.

These comments don’t prove that most viewers preferred Myung-joo and Dae-young.

They do show something interesting: even years later, the couple inspires strong emotional reactions.

A separate KBS Drama Classic recap also includes viewers remembering how painful and moving their romance was.

For a drama that premiered a decade ago, that kind of continued affection is meaningful.

I Still Love Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki’s Romance

My admiration for Kim Ji-won doesn’t mean I enjoyed the main couple any less.

    Quite the opposite.

Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon gave Descendants of the Sun much of its playful charm.

Their conversations, teasing, arguments, and romantic moments made the series remarkably enjoyable.

And whenever Gummy’s “You Are My Everything” played, those scenes became even harder to forget.

The two actors later married in real life in 2017, although their marriage ended in 2019.

That real-life history became another memorable part of the drama’s cultural legacy.

But when I think about which character personally captured my heart, my answer has never changed.

    It is Yoon Myung-joo.

Ten Years Later, Kim Ji-won’s Character Still Stands Out

A decade has passed since Descendants of the Sun first appeared on television.

Kim Ji-won has since played many other memorable characters, including Hong Hae-in in Queen of Tears.

But whenever I think about the moment I became her fan, I return to 2016.

To the confident military doctor who refused to let her father’s position determine her future.

To the woman who could be stubborn, funny, outspoken, and deeply vulnerable.

To someone who loved fiercely but still wanted the man she loved to retain his dignity.

There are many beautiful actresses in Korean dramas.

There are also many unforgettable romantic characters.

But sometimes one character connects with your own values so strongly that you remember her long after the story ends.

For me, Yoon Myung-joo was that character.

Song Hye-kyo helped make Descendants of the Sun unforgettable. But Kim Ji-won was the actress who won my heart.

And ten years later, she still has it.
