  • Netflix’s Outback: G’Day Webtoon, Cast and Story Explained

Netflix has announced a new Korean mystery series with a surprisingly international setting.

Outback, currently a working title, will star Ryu Jun-yeol, Hong Kyung, HOYEON, Won Ji-an and Justin H. Min.

But this is not simply another Korean thriller.

The story takes place in Australia, begins with the mysterious death of a young woman and is based on the Korean webtoon G’Day.

So what exactly is Outback about?

And how closely will the Netflix series follow the original webtoon?

Here is what we know so far.

    What Is Netflix’s Outback About?

The central character is Zion, played by Hong Kyung.

    Zion suddenly receives devastating news:

His sister has died in Australia.

He travels there looking for answers.

But once he arrives, questions begin to emerge about how his sister actually died.

In an unfamiliar country, Zion begins following the traces she left behind and becomes increasingly obsessed with discovering the truth.

That investigation brings him into contact with several mysterious characters.

And at the center of his suspicions is a man named Minhyuk.

    Ryu Jun-yeol Plays Minhyuk

Ryu Jun-yeol plays Minhyuk, one of the most mysterious characters in the story.

Netflix describes him as a man standing at the center of the investigation surrounding Zion’s sister.

That immediately creates one of the drama’s biggest questions:

What does Minhyuk know about her death?

Ryu Jun-yeol has previously appeared in Netflix projects including Revelations and The 8 Show, as well as films such as The Owl and Believer.

His casting suggests Minhyuk will be much more complicated than a simple villain.

    Hong Kyung Is Zion

Hong Kyung plays Zion, the character whose search drives the entire story.

After learning about his sister’s sudden death, Zion travels to Australia and begins following the traces she left behind.

The deeper he investigates, however, the more questions he discovers.

Hong Kyung may already be familiar to international K-drama viewers from Weak Hero Class 1.

In Outback, he appears positioned as the emotional center of the mystery.

The story begins with a brother wanting to understand how his sister died.

But that search could gradually become something much more dangerous.

    Won Ji-an Plays Zion’s Sister Si-young

    Won Ji-an plays Si-young, Zion’s sister.

Her death is the event that starts the entire story.

    That makes Si-young particularly interesting.

A character can die before the central investigation begins and still become one of the most important people in a mystery.

What was Si-young doing in Australia?

    Who did she know?

    What happened before her death?

And what did she leave behind?

Netflix says her character will add both emotional weight and mystery to the series.

That suggests viewers may gradually discover a very different version of Si-young from the one Zion thought he knew.

    HOYEON Plays Smiley

HOYEON plays a character called Smiley.

She is a livestream creator living in Australia who communicates with people through her broadcasts.

    Netflix describes Smiley as unpredictable.

This is particularly interesting casting for HOYEON, who became internationally known through Squid Game and has since expanded into projects including Hope.

A livestreamer can also serve an unusual role in a mystery.

    What has Smiley seen?

    What has she recorded?

And could something captured online become evidence in Si-young’s death?

For now, Netflix is keeping those answers secret.

    Justin H. Min Plays Scott

Justin H. Min joins the cast as Scott, a Korean-Australian police officer.

International viewers may recognize him from The Umbrella Academy, BEEF and After Yang.

Scott’s position could make him particularly important.

Zion is a Korean man investigating a death in an unfamiliar country.

    Scott exists between both worlds.

He understands Australia, but he also shares a Korean background with the characters at the center of the case.

Whether he becomes Zion’s ally — or another person Zion cannot completely trust — remains to be seen.

Is Outback Based on a Webtoon?

    Yes.

Netflix has officially confirmed that Outback is based on the Korean webtoon G’Day by Choi Yong-sung.

But viewers should not assume the Netflix version will reproduce the webtoon exactly.

Netflix says the adaptation will reimagine the characters, their backstories and relationships, while also expanding supporting characters and the larger world.

    That is an important detail.

It means knowing the original webtoon may provide clues about the basic mystery, but it may not reveal exactly what happens in the Netflix series.

The Netflix Version Could Be Very Different From G’Day

Executive producer and creator Han Jun-hee has explained that the adaptation aims to use television to explore the characters’ emotions and relationships more deeply.

The goal is not simply to reproduce the webtoon panel by panel.

The series will expand the emotional conflicts and growth of the young characters while preserving the mystery at the center of the story.

That makes Outback more of a reinterpretation than a straightforward adaptation.

For viewers who already know G’Day, that may actually make the series more interesting.

Even if you know the original story, you may not know exactly where Netflix is taking it.

The Team Behind Outback Is Another Reason to Watch

Han Jun-hee serves as executive producer and creator.

    That name is important.

Han directed Netflix’s D.P. and was involved in the Weak Hero franchise.

Director Jeon Du-gwan will direct the series, while Park Hyun-woo, who wrote Weak Hero Class 2, and Han Jun-hee are responsible for the screenplay.

That creative combination gives us a clue about the tone Netflix may be pursuing.

This probably will not be a simple “Who killed the sister?” mystery.

The creators appear interested in the relationships, instability and emotional damage surrounding the young characters as much as the crime itself.

    Why Australia Matters

The Australian setting may be one of Outback‘s biggest advantages.

Zion is not investigating his sister’s death in a familiar Korean city.

He is searching for answers in a foreign country.

    That immediately creates isolation.

Language, culture, geography and unfamiliar people can all become part of the tension.

And because several characters have connections to both Korea and Australia, the setting could become more than attractive scenery.

It may be essential to the mystery.

    When Will Outback Be Released?

Netflix has not announced a release date yet.

As of September 11, 2026, the project has been officially confirmed and its main cast has been revealed.

Netflix is also still referring to Outback as a working title.

So any specific release date currently circulating online should be treated cautiously unless Netflix officially announces it.

Why Outback Is Already Worth Watching

There are several reasons this project stands out even at this early stage.

    The cast is unusually strong.

The Australian setting gives the Korean mystery a different atmosphere.

The original webtoon provides an existing story foundation.

And the creators behind D.P. and Weak Hero suggest the series may focus as much on damaged relationships and unstable young people as on solving a crime.

But the most interesting question remains extremely simple:

    What really happened to Si-young?

Zion travels to Australia believing he is looking for the truth about his sister.

In a good mystery, however, discovering how someone died often leads to a more disturbing question:

How well did you actually know the person who died?

That may ultimately become the real mystery at the heart of Netflix’s Outback.
