Why ZENA? A Vocal Coach Explains Why RESCENE’s Maknae Sounds So Natural Singing Trot

    RESCENE has five members.

So why was ZENA the one standing in the center of a viral trot medley?

At first, the answer seems obvious.

    Maybe she simply likes trot.

Maybe the retro concept suited her.

Maybe putting the group’s 2008-born maknae in front of songs loved by much older generations was just funny enough to work.

But after ZENA’s Chuseok trot medley exploded past 10 million views, a Korean vocal coach asked a much more interesting question:

    Why ZENA?

His answer suggests the performance worked for reasons that go far beyond novelty.

ZENA Doesn’t Have Just One “Trot Voice”

One of the easiest misconceptions about trot is that singers simply need heavy vibrato and a nasal voice.

But vocal coach O Vocal argued that this isn’t what made ZENA’s performance work.

According to his analysis, ZENA has an unusual balance in her natural tone.

There is brightness and edge in her voice, but also softness.

That combination allows her to change the character of her sound without making every song feel identical.

And that becomes important when you remember what ZENA actually did.

She didn’t sing one trot song.

She performed a medley spanning very different styles and emotions.

If she had used exactly the same “trot voice” for every song, the performance could easily have become repetitive.

    Instead, her voice kept changing.

    Listen to “Yongdusan Elegy”

The vocal coach was immediately surprised by the opening.

He pointed to a slightly rough, airy quality in ZENA’s sound and explained that producing that texture while maintaining control requires effective breath pressure.

Then there was her dynamic control.

She could push the sound strongly and then pull it back.

    Her ornamentation wasn’t always exaggerated.

Sometimes the effect came from relatively small changes in intensity.

That matters because trot is not simply about adding as many vocal bends as possible.

The singer has to decide when to use them.

And ZENA seemed comfortable making those choices.

    Then She Changed Again

    The medley continued.

And ZENA didn’t keep singing the same way.

During “Bang Bang,” the coach identified several different qualities appearing inside the same performance — brighter tones, rougher textures and softer sounds.

Then came “What’s Wrong With My Age?”

    The balance changed again.

    Not too soft.

    Not excessively bright.

    Somewhere between the previous approaches.

By this point, the interesting question was no longer:

“Can a K-pop idol sing trot?”

    It was:

“How many different sounds is ZENA using?”

Then Came Jang Yoon-jeong’s “Oh My!”

This may be one of the clearest examples.

According to the vocal analysis, ZENA reduced the amount of vocal-fold contact compared with earlier songs.

The result was a lighter, breathier and more playful tone.

It sounded different from what came before.

But the coach also pointed out something important.

That kind of sound is difficult to control.

Creating a delicate tone doesn’t mean simply singing quietly.

The singer still has to manage the airflow and keep the sound stable.

ZENA wasn’t technically perfect at every moment.

    And that’s important to say.

The coach noticed places where maintaining that particular tone made the endings less stable.

But that actually makes his analysis more convincing.

He wasn’t simply praising everything she did.

He was explaining what she was attempting — and why it was difficult.

Then “Cho Hon” Changed the Mood Completely

The final song required something different.

    “Cho Hon” is not playful.

    It carries grief and longing.

    So ZENA changed again.

The coach noted that she brought more vocal contact and breath pressure back into the sound.

Suddenly, the cute retro performance had emotional weight.

And international viewers noticed it too.

In reactions to the medley, “Cho Hon” repeatedly became one of the songs viewers singled out.

Some people who had barely encountered trot before were suddenly searching for the song.

That’s an extraordinary outcome for a Chuseok variety video.

Why Does Her Voice Fit Trot?

The vocal coach’s answer is surprisingly simple.

    Flexibility.

ZENA’s voice contains enough brightness to cut through a lively trot song.

But she can also soften it.

She can introduce a rougher texture.

She can increase or decrease vocal contact.

She can change the amount of air in the sound.

And she can move between those choices depending on the song.

That gives her something particularly useful for a genre as varied as trot.

She doesn’t have to force every song into one vocal color.

The songs can change her voice.

But Technique Isn’t the Whole Story

There is another reason the performance feels natural.

    ZENA actually likes trot.

Fans had noticed this long before the viral Chuseok special.

She had sung trot in earlier content, and fans had already joked that someone should give her a proper trot opportunity.

So when the special finally happened, she wasn’t approaching the genre like an idol temporarily borrowing an old-fashioned concept.

She already seemed comfortable inside it.

That may explain one of the most important qualities of the video:

ZENA never looks embarrassed by the music.

    She commits to it.

The retro styling can be funny.

The other members dancing behind her can be hilarious.

But ZENA treats the singing seriously.

That combination makes the video work.

    Then Jang Yoon-jeong Heard It

    Millions of views are impressive.

But one reaction carried a different kind of weight.

Jang Yoon-jeong — one of Korea’s best-known trot singers — watched ZENA perform her songs.

Her response was playful but revealing:

Had ZENA ever thought about doing trot?

It was the perfect reaction to what millions of viewers were already thinking.

Maybe this wasn’t just a funny holiday performance.

Maybe ZENA actually has something here.

    Fans Heard Something New Too

The same discovery appears in international fan discussions.

After the video passed 10 million views, one Reddit commenter described ZENA’s voice as incredibly distinctive and praised how effortless her phrasing sounded.

Another said the performance made them see new possibilities in her voice.

    That’s significant.

ZENA didn’t suddenly become a better singer because she performed trot.

Instead, trot revealed parts of her voice that RESCENE’s normal music had not emphasized in the same way.

And that may be the real answer to “Why ZENA?”

Not because she can imitate a stereotypical trot singer.

Not because a young idol singing old songs is funny.

And not simply because she is RESCENE’s maknae.

It worked because when the songs changed,

    ZENA changed with them.

More than 10 million people came for a surprising trot performance.

Some of them left realizing something else:

RESCENE’s maknae had been hiding a much more versatile voice than they knew.
