WARNING: Major spoilers for Prom Night (2008) below.
If you watched Prom Night on Netflix and immediately searched “Who is the killer?” or “Why does he want Donna?”, the movie actually gives us a very direct answer.
The killer is Richard Fenton, Donna Keppel’s former teacher.
But Prom Night is not really a mystery about discovering the killer’s identity.
The more disturbing question is why Richard is so obsessed with Donna — and why he is willing to kill almost everyone around her.
Here is the full story.
Who Is the Killer in Prom Night?
The killer in Prom Night is Richard Fenton, played by Johnathon Schaech.
Richard was Donna Keppel’s former teacher.
Years before the prom, he developed a dangerous obsession with Donna.
This was not a normal romantic relationship, despite the way Richard imagined it.
Donna did not want him.
Richard, however, convinced himself that they belonged together.
And when Donna’s family stood between him and that fantasy, he murdered them.
Donna survived and witnessed part of the attack, leaving her deeply traumatized.
Richard was eventually captured.
But three years later, just as Donna is preparing for her senior prom, he escapes.
And he comes looking for her again.
Why Is Richard Fenton Obsessed With Donna?
This is the key to understanding the entire movie.
Richard does not see Donna as an independent person with her own choices.
He sees her as someone who belongs to him.
In his distorted mind, anyone standing between himself and Donna becomes an obstacle.
That is why his murders are not random.
Donna’s family was an obstacle.
Her friends become obstacles.
Her boyfriend becomes an obstacle.
Even police officers and hotel employees can become obstacles if they prevent him from reaching her.
Richard’s obsession therefore explains the basic logic behind the killing spree:
He wants to isolate Donna until, in his mind, there is nobody left between them.
Why Did Richard Kill Donna’s Family?
Richard murdered Donna’s family before the main events of Prom Night.
Their deaths are the reason Donna begins the movie already traumatized.
Her family had tried to protect her from Richard.
But Richard interpreted their attempts to keep him away from Donna as interference with the relationship he imagined existed.
Donna survived the massacre.
Richard was caught.
For Donna, the nightmare appeared to be over.
It wasn’t.
His escape turns her senior prom into a continuation of the trauma she thought she had survived.
Why Does Richard Kill Donna’s Friends at Prom?
Richard follows Donna to the hotel where the senior prom is being held.
From there, the murders begin.
Again, the important point is that Richard is not simply killing teenagers because they happen to be at a prom.
He is moving closer to Donna.
Anyone who might discover him, expose him or interfere with his attempt to reach her is in danger.
Donna’s friends Claire, Michael and Lisa are among the victims as Richard works his way through the hotel.
Eventually, Donna realizes that the nightmare from her past has returned.
How Does Richard Escape the Hotel?
This is one of the more important details in the final part of the movie.
Police eventually realize Richard is inside the hotel and evacuate the building.
But Richard manages to escape.
After killing a hotel employee, he uses the employee’s uniform as a disguise.
During the confusion of the evacuation, he slips away.
Detective Winn eventually realizes what happened.
And that leads to an even more frightening conclusion:
Richard is no longer at the hotel.
He is going after Donna again.
Does Bobby Die in Prom Night?
Yes.
Bobby, Donna’s boyfriend, is killed near the end of the movie.
After the hotel attack, Donna is taken home under police protection.
It should be the safest place available.
But Richard manages to reach her anyway.
Donna later returns to her bedroom and discovers that Bobby has been killed.
It is one of the cruelest moments in the movie because Bobby represented something Donna desperately needed after the murder of her family:
a normal life.
Richard destroys that too.
Does Donna Die in Prom Night?
No.
Donna survives.
But Richard gets terrifyingly close to killing her.
After murdering Bobby and penetrating the police protection around the house, Richard hides inside Donna’s home.
Donna eventually finds herself trapped with him.
Richard still behaves as though Donna should leave with him, showing that even after everything he has done, his fantasy has not changed.
Donna fights back and attempts to escape.
Richard catches her and is about to attack her when Detective Winn arrives.
How Does Richard Fenton Die?
Detective Winn kills Richard Fenton.
During the final struggle, Richard is on top of Donna and preparing to stab her.
Winn reaches the room in time and shoots him.
Richard Fenton finally dies, ending the immediate threat to Donna.
There is no last-minute reveal that another killer was responsible.
There is no twist showing that Richard secretly survived.
Richard is the killer, and his obsession with Donna is the driving force behind the murders.
Who Survives Prom Night?
Most importantly, Donna survives.
Detective Winn also survives and is the person who ultimately saves Donna from Richard.
But survival does not give Prom Night a particularly happy ending.
Donna began the story traumatized by the murder of her family.
By the end, she has survived Richard again — but has also lost people she loves, including Bobby and several of her friends.
Richard is dead.
Donna is alive.
But the emotional damage he leaves behind is enormous.
What Does the Ending of Prom Night Mean?
The ending becomes more interesting when you stop thinking about Prom Night as a simple “Who is the killer?” mystery.
Richard’s identity is not the real twist.
His obsession is the horror.
Richard repeatedly behaves as though killing people around Donna will somehow bring the two of them closer together.
In reality, every murder proves exactly the opposite.
Donna has spent years trying to rebuild her life after what Richard did to her family.
Then, in a single night, he destroys much of that new life as well.
Detective Winn can kill Richard.
He can stop the physical threat.
But he cannot undo what happened.
That is why the ending is darker than simply:
“The killer dies and Donna survives.”
Richard Fenton is finally gone.
But Donna must once again live with the consequences of what he did.
And that may be the most disturbing part of Prom Night.
