KPop Demon Hunters is officially getting a sequel.
That should be good news for fans.
But it immediately brings back one question that has refused to disappear since the first movie ended:
Should Jinu come back?
For many fans, the answer seems obvious. Jinu became one of the movie’s most popular characters, his relationship with Rumi ended before it could fully develop, and their final moments left viewers wanting more.
But there is another side to the argument.
Jinu’s sacrifice was one of the most emotional moments in KPop Demon Hunters.
If the sequel simply brings him back, does that make his sacrifice meaningless?
More than a year after the movie’s release, fans are still arguing about it.
Jinu’s Ending Was Designed to Hurt
Jinu does not receive the traditional romantic ending that many viewers expected.
Instead, he finally turns against Gwi-Ma and gives his soul to Rumi, allowing her to continue the fight.
It completes an important part of his character arc.
For centuries, Jinu lived with guilt over the decision that separated him from his human family. Gwi-Ma exploited that shame and kept him trapped within it.
His final choice is different.
For perhaps the first time in centuries, Jinu makes a decision that is not controlled by fear, shame or Gwi-Ma.
He chooses Rumi.
And he chooses sacrifice.
That is exactly why some fans believe he should remain dead.
“Let His Sacrifice Mean Something”
This argument continues to appear in KPop Demon Hunters fan discussions.
If death has no permanent consequences, emotional sacrifices can begin to feel less powerful.
Imagine watching Jinu disappear again while knowing that he will simply return in the next movie.
Would the original scene still hurt in the same way?
Some Reddit users argue that Jinu’s story already received a satisfying conclusion. He finally became free from Gwi-Ma, helped Rumi defeat him and ended his long existence as a demon on his own terms.
From that perspective, bringing Jinu back could turn a tragic ending into a temporary inconvenience.
And sequels have another problem.
Once audiences learn that a popular character can return from death, future deaths become harder to believe.
But Was Jinu’s Redemption Actually Finished?
The opposite argument may be even more interesting.
Did Jinu really complete his redemption?
He sacrificed himself, but he had spent centuries serving Gwi-Ma before making that decision.
Some fans argue that one heroic act should not automatically erase everything that came before it.
If Jinu returned as a living character, the sequel could force him to do something much more difficult than dying heroically:
live with what he did.
He could confront his past, face the consequences of his choices and slowly earn forgiveness rather than receiving redemption through one dramatic sacrifice.
In that interpretation, bringing Jinu back would not destroy his character arc.
It could continue it.
Then There Is Rumi
There is also an emotional reason fans want Jinu back.
Rumi and Jinu never received a conventional romantic conclusion.
Their relationship was built around something deeper than attraction: both carried parts of themselves that they believed had to remain hidden.
Jinu understood Rumi’s demon side in a way few others could.
Rumi, in turn, saw the humanity that Jinu believed he had lost.
Their relationship ended just as both characters began to understand each other.
That unfinished quality is exactly what made the ending powerful.
It is also exactly what makes fans want more.
A reunion would give the sequel an immediate emotional storyline.
But it creates a dangerous temptation for the filmmakers.
If Jinu returns simply because audiences want Rumi and Jinu together, the story risks feeling like fan service.
His return would need a reason bigger than romance.
The Directors Are Not Giving Fans an Answer
The sequel is no longer speculation.
Netflix officially confirmed KPop Demon Hunters will return, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans directing again.
But when the filmmakers were asked directly about Jinu, they carefully avoided revealing his fate.
Chris Appelhans joked that Jinu is “alive in our hearts,” while refusing to say anything further.
That answer solved absolutely nothing.
And perhaps that was intentional.
Because Jinu is now one of the sequel’s biggest mysteries.
There Are Ways to Bring Jinu Back Without Erasing His Death
The choice does not necessarily have to be simply “alive” or “dead.”
KPop Demon Hunters already established a supernatural world filled with souls, demons and magical barriers.
Jinu could return as a spirit.
He could communicate through Rumi’s sword.
Rumi could encounter him in the demon realm.
The story could explore fragments of his soul without completely reversing his sacrifice.
Some fans have proposed exactly these kinds of possibilities.
That might allow Jinu to remain part of the story while preserving the consequences of the first movie.
But even that approach has risks.
If Jinu appears constantly as a spirit, is he really gone?
At some point, the filmmakers still have to decide what his sacrifice actually meant.
Maybe the Real Question Is Not Whether Jinu Returns
The debate over Jinu reveals something bigger about sequels.
Fans naturally want more of the characters they love.
But good stories sometimes become memorable precisely because they refuse to give audiences everything they want.
Jinu returning could create an extraordinary second chapter.
Jinu remaining dead could preserve one of the first movie’s most powerful moments.
Either choice can work.
The important question is why the filmmakers make it.
If Jinu returns because his story still has something meaningful to say, his comeback could deepen KPop Demon Hunters.
If he returns only because he became popular, the sequel risks weakening the moment that made so many viewers care about him in the first place.
So perhaps the question fans should be asking is not:
“Will Jinu come back?”
It is:
“Can KPop Demon Hunters bring Jinu back without making his sacrifice mean less?”
That may be one of the hardest challenges facing KPop Demon Hunters 2.
