When tourists come to Korea looking for “real Korean food,” they usually start in the same places.
Myeongdong. Hongdae. Insadong. Famous restaurants on social media.
But on Reddit, travelers and locals often give a different piece of advice:
Get away from the tourist areas.
And as a Korean, I think they have a point.
The Best Korean Meal May Not Be Famous at All
Some of the most Korean meals in Seoul are served in restaurants tourists would simply walk past.
A tiny restaurant near an apartment complex.
A neighborhood place filled with office workers at lunchtime.
A restaurant run by the same owner for twenty years.
There may be no English menu, no Instagram-famous interior and no line of tourists outside.
You might simply get rice, soup, kimchi and several small side dishes.
Nothing looks particularly special to Koreans.
And that’s exactly why it can be special.
This is food people actually eat.
But There’s an Even More Authentic Korean Meal
There is something tourists rarely get to experience.
A meal cooked at home by a Korean mother.
For many Koreans, this is where the idea of “real Korean food” begins.
Fresh rice comes out of the rice cooker.
There is soup or jjigae in the middle of the table.
Yesterday’s kimchi is still there, but perhaps today there is a new namul side dish, grilled fish, rolled egg or whatever happened to be in the refrigerator.
There might be five side dishes.
There might be ten.
Nobody calls it a “Korean food experience.”
It’s just dinner.
And that’s the point.
Restaurant Korean Food and Home Korean Food Are Different
Restaurants need dishes that customers will order.
Home cooking doesn’t.
A Korean mother can cook according to the season, what is left in the refrigerator, what her family likes and what she bought cheaply at the market that morning.
The meal changes constantly.
That makes Korean home cooking difficult to reproduce in a restaurant.
Tourists may know bulgogi, samgyeopsal, tteokbokki and Korean fried chicken.
Koreans certainly eat those foods too.
But everyday Korean food can be much quieter.
Rice.
Soup.
Kimchi.
A few banchan.
Maybe one main dish shared by everyone.
So Where Should Tourists Look?
You probably can’t knock on a stranger’s apartment door and ask their mother to cook dinner.
So the next best thing may be surprisingly simple.
Leave the famous tourist street.
Walk into a residential neighborhood.
Look for the small restaurants filled with local workers, older couples or families.
Don’t only search for the restaurant with the most reviews.
Sometimes, the closer a meal gets to something a Korean mother might put on the family table, the closer you are getting to everyday Korean food.
Because in Korea, the most authentic meal may be the one nobody ever thought to advertise as authentic.
What Korean food would you want to try if you could eat one homemade meal in a Korean family’s home?
