KPop Demon Hunters Had Three Heroines — So Why Did Rumi Get Most of the Story?

Look at almost any image of HUNTR/X.

You see three women.

Rumi. Mira. Zoey.

They sing together, fight demons together and are marketed together as the central trio of KPop Demon Hunters.

But after watching the movie, some fans were left with an interesting question:

Was KPop Demon Hunters really a story about three heroines — or was it Rumi’s story with Mira and Zoey beside her?

More than a year after the movie’s release, fans are still debating that question.

And with a sequel coming, it has become much more important.

Rumi Clearly Had the Biggest Story

There is little mystery about who drives the main plot of the first movie.

It is Rumi.

Her demon patterns are one of the story’s central secrets.

Her relationship with Celine connects directly to the history of the demon hunters.

Her struggle with shame drives much of the movie’s emotional conflict.

Her relationship with Jinu creates another major storyline.

And her identity as both a demon hunter and someone who is part demon connects her personally to both sides of the movie’s world.

Mira and Zoey are essential to HUNTR/X.

But they do not receive anything close to the same level of individual exploration.

That did not necessarily make the first movie worse.

A movie has limited time, and Rumi gave the story a natural emotional center.

The problem comes afterward.

What happens to Mira and Zoey now?

Fans Are Still Asking for More Mira and Zoey

This question has remained surprisingly active among KPop Demon Hunters fans.

Recent Reddit discussions repeatedly ask for more development of Mira and Zoey in the sequel.

Some viewers originally expected all three members of HUNTR/X to have interconnected character arcs.

Instead, they felt Mira and Zoey primarily reacted to Rumi’s journey.

One recent discussion asked whether the two characters are now destined to remain deuteragonists while Rumi continues as the franchise’s central protagonist.

That would not necessarily be unusual.

Many stories feature a team while still having one clear lead.

But HUNTR/X creates a different expectation.

They are presented as a trio.

And that makes fans naturally want to understand all three women.

Mira Already Has a Story Waiting to Be Told

Mira may be the easiest character to expand.

The first movie gives us hints about her difficult relationship with her family.

She is confident, direct and often appears emotionally tougher than the others.

But that toughness may be more complicated than it first appears.

Fans have suggested that Mira’s fear of losing HUNTR/X could be connected to her previous experience with family rejection.

That would make some of her reactions to Rumi more interesting.

When Rumi hides the truth from the group, Mira is not simply angry because someone lied.

She may also be reacting to the possibility that another family she depends on is falling apart.

That is a much richer character conflict than simply making Mira “the tough member.”

And Reddit fans have already proposed an entire Mira-focused sequel exploring those unresolved family relationships.

Zoey May Have an Even More Interesting Identity Problem

Zoey looks like the lightest member of the trio.

She is energetic, funny and frequently provides warmth to HUNTR/X.

But there are hints of something deeper underneath that personality.

Zoey grew up between Korean and American cultures.

Fans have interpreted parts of her characterization as someone who desperately wants to belong and sometimes changes herself to avoid rejection.

That could become a major storyline.

What does being Korean mean to Zoey?

What does being American mean to her?

Where does she actually feel at home?

And how much of her cheerful personality comes from genuinely being optimistic — versus wanting everyone around her to be happy with her?

One recent fan proposal even suggested making Zoey the protagonist of the second movie and using her curiosity about demons to expand the mythology of the entire franchise.

That shows how much unused story potential fans already see in her.

But Should Rumi Stop Being the Main Character?

Not everyone agrees.

There is a strong argument that Rumi should remain the franchise’s central character.

And it is easy to understand why.

Rumi has something Mira and Zoey currently do not:

a direct connection to the central mythology.

She is part demon.

Her family history remains mysterious.

Her relationship with Celine is unresolved.

Her connection to Jinu may not be finished.

And the transformation of the Honmoon creates even more questions about what her powers and identity could mean in the future.

If KPop Demon Hunters 2 wants to explore demons, the Honmoon and the history of the hunters, Rumi naturally belongs at the center of those stories.

Some Reddit fans therefore argue that giving Mira or Zoey an entire movie could pull the sequel away from what makes KPop Demon Hunters unique.

Their backstories cannot simply become ordinary family dramas.

They still need to connect to demon hunting, music and the mythology of the world.

That is a fair concern.

Maybe the Sequel Does Not Need a New Main Character

There may be a better solution.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 does not necessarily need to replace Rumi with Mira or Zoey.

It could simply stop treating character development as something only one member receives.

Imagine Rumi still carrying the central supernatural storyline while Mira’s family history affects the team’s trust.

At the same time, Zoey’s struggle with belonging could connect to the group’s growing international fame.

Now all three stories could collide.

Rumi asks:

Can I accept what I am?

Mira asks:

Can I trust another family not to abandon me?

Zoey asks:

Where do I actually belong?

Those are different questions.

But they all connect to the same idea:

identity.

Suddenly HUNTR/X would not simply be three characters standing beside each other.

They would be three variations of the movie’s central theme.

HUNTR/X Works Best When All Three Matter

The emotional climax of KPop Demon Hunters ultimately depends on the relationship between the three women.

Rumi cannot truly accept herself while continuing to hide from Mira and Zoey.

And HUNTR/X cannot function simply because its members sing well together.

Their bond matters.

That means developing Mira and Zoey would not necessarily distract from Rumi’s story.

It could actually make Rumi’s story stronger.

The audience would understand exactly what Rumi was afraid of losing.

The Sequel Has an Opportunity the First Movie Did Not

The first KPop Demon Hunters had a difficult job.

It had to introduce HUNTR/X, explain demon hunters, establish the Honmoon, introduce the Saja Boys, develop Rumi and Jinu, deliver multiple songs and still function as an entertaining animated movie.

Something had to receive less attention.

Mira and Zoey were part of that compromise.

The sequel does not have the same excuse.

We already know the world.

We already know the trio.

We already understand what they do.

Now the story has room to ask who they actually are.

And that may be one of the biggest opportunities for KPop Demon Hunters 2.

Because the first movie convinced millions of viewers to care about HUNTR/X.

The second movie can finally prove that HUNTR/X was always supposed to be more than one heroine and two friends.

Rumi may be the center of HUNTR/X.

But a trio needs three stories.
