Who Is RESCENE — And How Did They Suddenly Rank Above BTS and BLACKPINK?

If you follow K-pop casually, you probably know BTS.

You know BLACKPINK.

But there is a good chance you still have one question:

Who is RESCENE?

That question became much more interesting in September 2026.

RESCENE unexpectedly took No. 1 in the Korean Business Research Institute’s monthly idol group brand reputation ranking, ahead of BTS at No. 2 and BLACKPINK at No. 3.

For a relatively young girl group, that’s an eye-catching result.

So what exactly happened?

And does this really mean RESCENE has suddenly become bigger than BTS and BLACKPINK?

The answer to the second question is simple:

No.

But the reason RESCENE reached No. 1 may tell us something interesting about how quickly attention can shift in K-pop.

First, Who Is RESCENE?

RESCENE is a five-member South Korean girl group consisting of Woni, Liv, Minami, May and Zena.

The group has been building momentum rather than exploding from one isolated viral moment.

By September 2026, that momentum had become difficult to ignore.

RESCENE also ranked No. 1 among rookie idol groups in September, with its index increasing 10.03 percent from August.

Then something even more surprising happened.

They topped the overall girl-group brand ranking too.

RESCENE Even Ranked Above BLACKPINK Among Girl Groups

In the September girl-group analysis, RESCENE took first place.

BLACKPINK finished second.

IVE was third.

TWICE and Red Velvet completed the top five.

That alone would have been impressive.

But a few days later, the institute released its ranking combining both male and female idol groups.

RESCENE was No. 1 again.

This time the order began:

RESCENE
BTS
BLACKPINK
ATEEZ
CORTIS

RESCENE recorded a brand reputation index of 8,227,982, up 16.78 percent from August, while BTS recorded 7,032,284.

Suddenly, a group that many international casual K-pop listeners may barely know was sitting above two of the most famous Korean music acts in the world.

So How Did This Happen?

The clues are inside the data.

Among the phrases strongly associated with RESCENE were “LOVE ATTACK” and “Pretty Girl.”

Related terms included ideas such as people becoming fans, proving themselves and cheering the group on.

The institute also reported a 94.92 percent positive reaction rate in its positive-versus-negative analysis.

That suggests RESCENE wasn’t simply generating controversy or temporary curiosity.

There was substantial positive online activity surrounding the group during the measurement period.

And this is important because the ranking is designed to capture exactly that kind of activity.

But Did RESCENE Really “Beat BTS”?

This is where headlines can become misleading.

If someone sees:

“RESCENE No. 1, BTS No. 2”

it is easy to interpret that as:

“RESCENE is now more popular than BTS.”

That’s not what this ranking proves.

The brand reputation index analyzes factors such as consumer participation, media coverage, interaction and community activity during a specific period. For September’s overall idol ranking, the analyzed data covered August 16 through September 16.

It does not directly rank groups by:

album sales,

Spotify streams,

concert ticket sales,

international fandom size,

or lifetime popularity.

In fact, BTS still ranked No. 1 in September’s separate boy-group brand analysis.

So RESCENE’s result is better understood as a measurement of how intensely people were talking about and engaging with the group during this period, not proof that their overall fandom has surpassed BTS or BLACKPINK.

That’s Actually What Makes the Result More Interesting

RESCENE doesn’t need to be “bigger than BTS” for this to matter.

Think about what had to happen for a younger group to generate enough participation, media attention and community activity to reach the top of this particular ranking.

Only one month earlier, BTS had been No. 1 in the overall idol group ranking, while RESCENE was already close behind at No. 2.

So September wasn’t completely random.

There had already been a trend developing.

RESCENE went from being a promising rookie group to competing for attention alongside some of K-pop’s biggest names.

That progression may be more important than the No. 1 headline itself.

K-Pop’s Next Big Group Doesn’t Always Arrive With a Warning

K-pop moves quickly.

A group can spend months building a fanbase quietly before one song, performance, member or online trend suddenly pushes it in front of a much larger audience.

Then casual listeners look at the charts and ask:

“Wait, who are they?”

RESCENE may be entering that stage now.

The September ranking doesn’t tell us that they have already reached BTS or BLACKPINK’s global scale.

It tells us something different:

A lot more people are paying attention to RESCENE than before.

And sometimes, that is where the interesting part of a K-pop story begins.

So instead of asking whether RESCENE has already “beaten” BTS or BLACKPINK, there may be a better question:

Is RESCENE becoming one of the next K-pop groups international fans should start watching?

September 2026 has certainly given people a reason to find out.
